Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse is certainly a contender for the best biking road in the world. It’s a toll road, which keeps the traffic levels down – and affords the owners to maintain it to a standard you will never see on any public road in the UK. Smooth pristine grippy tarmac and very little traffic. It was so good when I rode it that I turned round before the toll booth at the end and rode it all again – several times!

So why the picture of a cow? That particular young lady had just tried to help herself to a picnic that was being carefully laid out in the back of a camper van, by a particularly nervous young Austrian man. I think he was unaware that cows are generally placid curious creatures. A gentle push and a pat on the flanks soon had it redirected away from his lunch. Although I’m not sure he would have relished the sandwiches after a cow had licked them.
Below is a short clip of me enjoying the road.
